RC Electric Airplanes: What's All the Excitement About?
Electric power for RC aircraft: planes, helicopters, ducted fan jets; is the fastest growing aspect of this hobby/sport. There are lots of reasons for this, but perhaps two major developments have created this gold-rush atmosphere. First, the recent bringing to market of the Lithium Polymer battery - a refinement of the lithium-ion battery. Second, the disappearance of many of the traditional local RC flying sites under the pressure of real-estate development and population growth.
The radio control Lithium-Polymer (Li-Po) battery is characterized by the use of a solid, the polymer, which acts as the electrolyte, like the acid in your car's battery. This development has made the lithium based battery relatively more stable, physically stronger and a little easier to manufacture.
The advantages to this battery for the modeler are 50% or greater weight reduction over nickel cadmium batteries, greatly increased power storage and considerably longer shelf-life without auto-discharging.
The disadvantages are that the LiPo battery must be carefully charged on a dedicated LiPo-capable charger, maximum discharge must be monitored and that careless handling, charging, or discharging can result in fire or explosion! (Battery manufacturers are now often including protection built into the battery packs to minimize these dangers, but the rule is to read the directions and be careful).
When coupled with the many new inexpensive brushless motors and controllers now available, modelers can have fully aerobatic rc planes that will fly for 15-25 minutes(!) without recharging! And, it is possible to buy such a plane and equip it for under 0 total! This is an exciting development, and as one hobby-shop owner put it to me, "this is putting the fun back into RC!"
Because of the inherent advantages to RC electric airplanes; quiet, reliable, clean and now long-flying and powerful, it really is possible and fun to fly in the small schoolyard or park. You don't have to seek out the RC flying field that is an hour's drive away from home or work and you don't have to deal with neighbors who are incensed over the noise from glow or gas powered models.

Helicopter Pilot Licenses - How to Complete Your Helicopter Pilot Training and Get a Job
No matter where you currently live, you will need to gain some type of licensing before you begin to fly any kind of helicopter. There are a few different kinds of licenses that can be obtained, and each of these licenses is uniquely differently from the last. To find out what kind of license you should gain, take a look at these helicopter pilot licenses.
If you wish to fly a helicopter on a private basis only should seek a PPL-H license (Private Pilot Licence - Helicopter). This license will not allow you to fly commercial helicopters, but it will allow you to fly a helicopter for your own private use.
Contrastingly, the CPL-H (Commercial Pilot Licence - Helicopter) will allow you to fly a helicopter commercially. This includes using a helicopter for sight-seeing tours or photographic flights. You cannot fly a helicopter in any commercial manner with a PPL-H license. In order to gain a CPL-H license, you will first have to successfully complete the PPL-H license training.
If you want to work for an airline, then you will have to gain an ATPL-H (Airport Transport Pilot Licence). This license will allow you to work for any airline transporting people and cargo. Often, this license is harder to obtain, but it is one license that will allow you to work full-time as a helicopter pilot.
Lastly, the IFR rating license is a bit different from all the other licenses mentioned above. The Instrument Flight Rules license is necessary if you wish to fly a helicopter under any kind of weather condition. If you want to fly at night, when visibility is reduced, or using only instruments to fly, then you must have an IFR license. This is an important license to gain if you want to become indispensible to a commercial or cargo company.
Keep in mind that you can only fly the type of helicopter that you train with. Thus, if you want to fly a large or small helicopter, look for a flight school that will provide the right kind of training. If you wish to fly a different kind of helicopter, then you will have to gain specific training for each additional helicopter that you want to fly.
Since flight regulations are set by each country, the country that you live in may have specific licensing rules. However, most countries around the world offer the same licenses as those listed above, and many of the training programs are similar. To find out where you can obtain the kind of license that you need, contact a flight school in your area.
If you can't find what you are looking for, then consider international flight schools. You may find that some schools in your area do not offer the kind of licensing that you desire, though many schools will accept boarding students, so you can apply to any school that you find. Becoming a helicopter pilot can be a rewarding career if you have the right kind of license.

The AXN Clouds Fly Floater is still my favorite all-round RC plane, capable of handling the strongest winds yet also able to soar with the hawks in our spring thermals. This time I took the opportunity to test out my HD keychain camera after reflashing it to remove the time/datestamp. What you see in this video are onboard shots from the AXN (with a 6x5 prop) doing near-vertical climbs and dives. The last pull-out was fairly low and involved lots of G's -- but the AXN wasn't fazed. Sorry if you find this video boring -- but it was fun to make ;-)

Flying a helicopter is extremely difficult and very costly to learn. Even the R/C helicopters take a lot of practice and pain. However online flight simulators offer broadly the same experience at very little cost and you will experience how to learn to fly one within a realistic cockpit, with realistic scenery, noise and a huge choice of airports and aircraft carriers to hone your skills upon.

As is the scenery, noise and even changeable weather conditions to keep you right on your toes.
Flight simulation games are completely downloadable, all you require is a good PC and away you go. The software in a good game is so good that you can fly directly above your own house - but you'll have to practice how to take off first. You can then land at 20,000 plus airports around the world and after you've mastered the helicopter then move onto the 100 plus planes available as well.
When people think of flight simulators they are generally thinking of the choose of planes available. In fact the best flight simulator games for 2011 have over 120 planes you can choose from, but, there is also quite a wide range of helicopters to choose from too. Helicopters are hard work to learn. So expect some considerable time before you can master all the necessary skills. One experienced helicopter pilot once told me that when you begin to learn it's like standing on a ball juggling oranges.
However good flight games have excellent tutorials to take you from the basics and provide skills that you could then take with you to a flight school to learn the real thing.
